The beginning of a new year is always a great time to make plans. The year still has this feel of a fresh start to it. Like a blank canvas just waiting to be filled with awesome adventures. There are 5 oceans, 7 continents and almost 200 countries on this earth and only one life to explore them all. And although most people probably never write it down I’m sure we all have a secret bucket list of places we’d like to see at least once during our lifetime. So I figured it was the perfect time to share my bucket list with you guys!

This list will most definitely never be finished as I’ll probably add two new destinations for every travel goal I cross out. Hope it’ll give you some inspiration and spark some wanderlust!

Backpack through New Zealand – DONE!

As most of you guys know this dream came true for me in 2012/2013 when I spent six and half month backpacking this paradise at the end of the world. With its breathtaking scenery, mild climate and super-friendly people this place exceeded my wildest expectations and earned a spot in my heart. If New Zealand isn’t on your travel bucket list yet then you should consider adding it right now!

Because see above!

Finally swim in Lake Garda

I’ve been to beautiful Lake Garda in Italy twice. A couple of days before I visited for the first time in 1998 I figured it was a very smart idea to place my right middle finger into my grandma’s front door and then slam it shut. Luckily the fingertip was sewn back on and the nail grew back but no swimming for me during this vacation. When I visited again in autumn 2014 I caught the flu and fever + cold water just weren’t the best combination. I’m not giving up hope though that at some point I will swim in Lake Garda.

Spend the night in a cabin in the Canadian wilderness – ON THE AGENDA FOR SUMMER 2017!

I imagine Canada to be the most Instagram-perfect destination for nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts and shutterbugs. Exploring the great outdoors during the day and curling up in a cozy cabin or tent by night is something I simply HAD to put on my travel bucket list. 2017 is the perfect time to visit as admission to National Parks will be completely free this year (Canada is celebrating its 150th birthday!).

See the Great Lakes – DONE!

I visited during a student exchange 10 years ago and I still remember it was a snowy morning in early March and insanely cold. I probably could’ve appreciated this experience more under different circumstances so I might visit again someday 😀

See the Northern Lights

Is there a person on this planet who doesn’t want to see the Northern Lights? Anyone? When I think of the Northern Lights I always think Iceland and the Lofoten islands. The desire to go there is probably partially fueled by Facebook and Instagram envy but I can’t help it when I see people like the extremely talented Felix Röser flood my feed with their fantastic photography.

See the Southern Lights

Why not watch the southern counterpart of the Aurora Borealis as well? And here we go again, New Zealand!

Stay in a place dark enough to see the Milky Way  – DONE!

Growing up in a small town in Central Europe I always thought I was able to see the stars at night. I had no clue. I never actually realized the Milky Way was called like that because it looks like just that – at least in some places on this planet. I can only recommend getting away from the city lights far enough at least once in your life. Stars shine brightest in the dark.

Go to London for Fashion Week – DONE!

London is one of my fav cities and I keep coming back over and over as this place will forever stay on my travel bucket list. One of the main reasons is obviously that it’s one of the fashion capitals of this world. I grew up in what I would call a fashion desert. A place where people are pretty much wearing uniform because they’re all wearing the same jeans and Jack Wolfskin jackets (although they’re on the subway, not on a hiking trail). I would get stared and pointed at on my way to the airport. An hour later I would step out of the plane in London with people approaching me asking: “Great style, are you here for Fashion Week?”

Stay at a capsule hotel in Tokyo

Japan’s been on my bucket list for a while now. And of course I would love to take the chance to experience something that doesn’t even exist where I live. I’m not exactly claustrophobic – in fact I find small spaces super cozy and would love to stay at a hotel with rooms the size of a bath tub.

Hike across the Alps

I love hiking. I love challenges. And I live only a two hour drive from the Alps. So I’m pretty sure this is going to happen at some point. There are several tracks that’ll allow you to cross the Alps ranging from easy to hard and from 140 to 1000 km. It must be such an amazing feeling to arrive in beautiful Italy, breathe the gentle Mediterranean air and realize that you literally crossed this massive mountain range on foot. This must be such a fantastic one-in-a-lifetime experience!

Have coffee and a croissant in Paris – DONE!

Yep, this happened in March 2017 and there’s a whole blog post about my trip to Paris on the blog!

Go to Paris in summer

As it was pretty rainy during my time in the City of Love my next goal is to see this beautiful place during summer!

Finally visit New York City

People keep asking me why I would like to go to New York as if it was something that required an explanation. Growing up in a small town in Bavaria, Germany I was always very far away from where the ACTUAL stuff happened. Like… you know, where the successful people live, where the future happens years before it reaches that little town in Bavaria. The places you see in movies and on fancy Instagram profiles. It does spark quite a bit of FOMO.

So what’s on your travel bucket list and why? Please let me know in the comments!
